Eucharistic Adoration on Thursdays
All are welcome to spend time with the Lord during Eucharistic Adoration each Thursday from after the noon Mass until 5:30pm.

Thursday is traditionally the Eucharistic Day in the Catholic Church as it is the day our Lord gave us His Body and Blood at the Last Supper. It is also the day the friars and postulants at St. Joseph Cupertino Friary, of which the Shrine of St. Anthony is part, celebrate a holy hour. In addition, all the friars of the St. Anthony Province (all of the East Coast) celebrate a holy hour for vocations on the third Thursday of each month. The friars are encouraged to invite our brothers and sisters who come to their ministries to participate in this prayerful experience.

The Blessed Sacrament will be exposed following the noon Mass. There will be time for quiet adoration until 4:30pm. At that time, the friars and all present will begin their evening prayers, which include the Liturgy of the Hours (psalms), quiet time, Scripture reading, intercessory prayer, and Benediction.

All are welcome....

Today, the Church grants a Plenary Indulgence to the faithful who visit the Portiuncula or some other Franciscan Church on August 2nd.

Confession will begin at 11am. on Saturday August 2nd.

Feast of St. Clare of Assisi
The Feast of St. Clare of Assisi is Monday August 11th. Mass is at 12 noon in the Shrine Chapel.

Clare was born into the wealthy Offreduccio family in 1194. In 1212, on Palm Sunday, she was received into the fraternity by St. Francis at the Portiuncula (the Chapel of Our Lady of the Angels.) Clare lived a life marked by poverty and deprivation that brought encouragement and healing to others. The sackcloth of harsh living conditions became a garment of joy. Clare died on August 11, 1253 after receiving the "privilege of poverty" from Pope Gregory IX. She was canonized a saint in 1255.

"Father of Mercies, may we strive to always imitate the way of holy simplicity, humility, and poverty shown us by our father Francis, and in our conversion by Christ. Spread the fragrance of a good name, from those who live faithfully according to your will. May we love one another with the charity of Christ. May the love that we have in our hearts show itself in our actions. And may our love and example increase love of God and charity for one another in all places. Amen." Clare of Assisi...

Blessing of Students, Vigil Mass St. Joseph Cupertino, & Ice Cre
The Franciscan Friars of the Shrine of St. Anthony invite all students, their parents, grandparents, teachers, and friends to celebrate a special Mass in honor of the Franciscan Friar Joseph Cupertino who found difficulty with his studies, especially taking tests. As we begin the new school year we ask Jesus, the Greatest Teacher, to bless us all and help us as we use our God given gifts this school year. Students are invited to bring their backpacks full of school supplies and books for a special blessing with the relic of St. Joseph Cupertino during the Liturgy.

The Vigil Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday September 17th at 6:30pm. in the Shrine Chapel. Following Mass there will be an ice cream social in the Papal Dining Room. There is no charge for this event.

St. Joseph Cupertino was born in Cupertino, Italy in 1603. He was frequently ill while he was growing up, and this meant that he hardly ever attended school. Furthermore, he was not especially gifted with intellectual abilities, so by the time that he reached adulthood, he had gained a reputation for being "slow."

Joseph wanted to join a religious order and serve as a brother, but no religious community would accept him. Finally, his uncle, who happened to be the guardian of a Conventual Franciscan community, arranged for Joseph to become a friar.

From his earliest days in the order, it was obvious that he was a very holy man. His ministers were so impressed at his holiness that they asked him to study for the priesthood.

The task seemed hopeless, for the studies were long and difficult, and Joseph was simply not a good student. He continued to study away, and when his final exam for the priesthood arrived, he prayed that he be asked the one material which he knew well. Sure enough, that was the exact question that his examiners asked him, and he was ordained to the priesthood.

Throughout his religious life, he showed greater and greater signs of being one with God. He was able to prophesy future events, his intercession brought miraculous cures and he was able to read minds.
His most famous gift was the fact that when he prayed, he would levitate (float right off the ground.) For this reason, in addition to being the patron saint of students who are taking examination, he is also the patron saint of those who fly airplanes.

He died on September 18, 1663, and was canonized on July 16, 1767. His feast day is September 18th.

Prayer for Students:
O humble St. Joseph, the Holy Spirit guided you in your studies and helped you through your examinations. Studies were not easy for you, so I am sure that you understand my difficulties.

Help me to remember the importance of my studies so that I may use all the talents that God has given me.

Calm me when I become nervous and confused, especially when I am taking my exams.

Give me the humility to accept my limitations. Let me never measure my self-worth according to the mark I receive but rather according to the effort I give.

And most of all, remind me to use what I learn in service of God and my brothers and sisters, for that is the true wisdom that never fades. Amen....

Greccio Living Nativity Saturday & Sunday
The Franciscan Friars of the Shrine of St. Anthony invite you to join them and the members of the St. Louis Catholic Church Youth Ministry on Saturday December 6th at 7:30pm. or Sunday December 7th at 7:30pm. as they commemorate the Birth of Jesus in the manner of St. Francis of Assisi in the little town of Greccio, Italy. The Greccio Living Nativity will be the same program both nights. Our service of prayers, Christmas carols, and a living Nativity will take place outside at the Red Barn. Following the Living Nativity, all are invited to enjoy hot cocoa and cookies. Bring your family and friends and discover the true meaning of Christmas! All are welcome.

Legend has it the Christmas Creche or Nativity Scene as it is commonly called, began in Italy in 1223, when St. Francis of Assisi re-created the Bethlehem scene at Greccio. "There simplicity was honored, poverty exalted, humility was commended, and Greccio was made, as it were, a new Bethlehem."

There is no charge for this event. For further information please contact the Shrine office at 410-531-2800 or info@shrineofstanthony.org.

Sunday January 18th
Sunday January 25th

All are welcome. There is no charge for this event.

Br. Gerry Seipp, OFM Conv., one of the Franciscan Friars at the Shrine of St. Anthony, loves trains! He has been collecting trains and train accessories since he was a child growing up in East Baltimore. He also collects train postcards and books on trains. His Christmas train garden has been collected and added to over the past decade. Bring your family and friends to the Manor House and enjoy an old-fashioned train garden and the chance to talk trains with Br. Gerry!

Prayer Shawl Ministry
In the spirit of St. Clare of Assisi, we invite you to join us in our Clare Prayer Shawl Ministry. A prayer shawl embraces and comforts the wearer with the love and prayers of the maker and the faith community. Recipients of the shawls may be people who are undergoing medical procedures, who are grieving, or who need to feel the love and support of the community during a difficult time in their life. The Prayer Shawl Ministry also makes shawls for family members of Fallen Soldiers. Meetings are on the 2nd Tuesday of each month. Members meet at the noon Mass. After Mass, members eat lunch (bring your own), and knit or crochet until 2:30pm. New members are always welcome....
