Novena to St. Anthony (Healer of Soul and Body) Week #9
Please join us today as we pray the Novena to St. Anthony following the noon Mass. There are thirteen invocations of St. Anthony. Each Tuesday we pray the petition for the particular week.

Week #9: St. Anthony - Healer of Soul and Body

Recite together:
Anthony, through your teaching and preaching you bore witness to the loving presence of God in all of creation. Now that you have come into the fullness of the kingdom, pray for us that our lives might also proclaim the good news of Jesus Christ to all humanity.

Leader: Pray for us, St. Anthony.
All: Help us become worthy of the promises of Christ.
Leader: Let us pray.
Almighty, eternal God, you have given your people St. Anthony as an outstanding preacher and intercessor in times of need. Grant that with his help we may follow the example of Christian living and experience your support in all adversities. We ask this thorugh Christ our Lord. Amen.

St. Anthony - Healer of Soul and Body - help us find a cure for what ails us in mind, body or spirit, that we may be whole persons. (Pause)

Recite together:
St. Anthony, you raised your voice in praise of God and led others to acclaim His name. Instill in me that same spirit of awe and reverence for the God who loves us forever and ever. Amen.

Leader: Let us pray.
O God, may you be glorified by our companionship with St. Anthony, the friar, priest, and doctor of the Gospels. Through the thirteen weeks of prayer, may we be renewed in faith, hope, and charity. We ask this with confident trust that through the intercession of St. Anthony, you will bring us to the rewards of eternal life promised by Christ our Lord. Amen....

August 30, 2016 - November 20, 2016 The Holy Door at the Shrine of St. Anthony Questions & Answers
The Holy Door at the Shrine of St. Anthony was opened on Sunday December 13th by Fr. Michael and the Friars, and will remain open until Sunday November 20, 2016 when the Year of Mercy closes. The Holy Door is located in front of the Shrine building down the steps of the piazza and through the wrought iron doorway on the left side. The doorway is flanked by boxwood topiary and topped with a Tau Cross. The Holy Door at the Shrine of St. Anthony is available daily from dawn to dusk for everyone to walk through.

What is the symbolism of the Holy Door?
A Holy Door is open only during a Jubilee Year, typically every 25 years. Pope Francis said, "On that day, the Holy Door will become a Door of Mercy through which anyone who enters will experience the love of God who consoles, pardons, and instills hope."

We Catholics use symbols. We use what we can see to encounter what we can't see. The waters of Baptism are used to wash and give new life. A huge candle at Easter is used to symbolize Christ Risen. We mark ourselves with the sign of the Cross to symbolize taking up our Cross and following Jesus.

Doors are very symbolic. They can represent passage: from cold to warmth, from aloneness to belonging, from the old to the new, from doubt to faith. Jesus describes himself as The Door and invites us to pass through Him to the heart of the Father. He says, "Whoever enters through Me will be safe. They will find life. For I came that you might have life and have it to the full." Jesus is the door Who leads to salvation. To walk through the Holy Door is symbolic of our entering and resting safely in the merciful love and life of God.

The doors of a Church mark the boundary where the ordinary becomes the extraordinary. By throwing them open (and on the anniversary of the Council, no less), Pope Francis is emphasizing his desire to throw open the doors of the faith to the world.

What do I get - Indulgence?
The word indulgence is meant to express the indulgent and lavish mercy that our Father God pours on us, His children. Though we children sometimes stray, God's love is everlasting. In the Old Testament Book of Hosea, God says, "My mercy toward you grows warm and tender."

To receive a full indulgence (called a plenary indulgence), you must:
1. Walk through the Holy Doors
2. Go to confession
3. Receive Communion
4. Pray for the intentions of the Pope

We welcome everyone to visit the Shrine of St. Anthony during this Jubilee Year of Mercy and walk through the Holy Door, go to confession, attend daily Mass at 12 noon, and pray for the intentions of Pope Francis.

The Shrine grounds are open from dawn to dusk and include several prayer paths, the grotto, outdoor Stations of the Cross, the Shrine to St. Maximilian Kolbe, and much more.

Back to School Mass for Students
Back to School Mass in the Shrine Chapel on Monday September 19th at 6:30pm., followed by an Ice Cream Social. All are welcome.

The Franciscan Friars of the Shrine of St. Anthony invite all students, their parents, grandparents, teachers, and friends to celebrate a special Mass in honor of the Franciscan Friar Joseph Cupertino, who found difficulty with his studies, especially taking tests.

As we begin the new school year we ask Jesus, the Greatest Teacher, to bless us all and help us as we use our God-given gifts this school year. Students are invited to bring their backpacks full of school supplies and books for a special blessing with the relic of St. Joseph Cupertino during the Liturgy. Following Mass, we will have an ice cream social in the courtyard.

St. Joseph Cupertino was born in Cupertino, Italy. He was not especially gifted with intellectual abilities and yet when his Conventual Franciscan ministers encouraged him to study for the priesthood, he dutifully obeyed.

At his final exam, he prayed that his examiners question him on the one material he had prepared and his prayer was answered. Because of this, he has become the patron saint of student's taking exams.

St. Joseph's fame grew as his holiness became more and more obvious. He would often levitate (float off the ground) while he was praying. Because of this, he is the patron saint of those who fly.

He died on September 18, 1663, and was canonized on July 16, 1767. His feast day is September 18th.

Prayer for Students:
O humble St. Joseph, the Holy Spirit guided you in your studies and helped you through your examinations.

Calm me when I become nervous and confused, especially when I am taking my exams. Let me never measure my self-worth according to the grade I receive, but rather according to the effort I give.

Help me to remember the importance of my studies but most of all, remind me to use what I learn in service of God and my brothers and sisters-in-Christ. Keep me always vigilant to the fact that all things come from God and are to be used for His glory....

Eucharistic Adoration on Thursdays
Eucharistic Adoration will not be held in September. It will resume on Thursday October 6th. Thank you, the Friars.

All are welcome to spend time with the Lord during Eucharistic Adoration each Thursday from after the noon Mass until 5:30pm.

Thursday is traditionally the Eucharistic Day in the Catholic Church as it is the day our Lord gave us His Body and Blood at the Last Supper. It is also the day the friars and postulants at St. Joseph Cupertino Friary, of which the Shrine of St. Anthony is part, celebrate a holy hour. In addition, all the friars of the St. Anthony Province (all of the East Coast) celebrate a holy hour for vocations on the third Thursday of each month. The friars are encouraged to invite our brothers and sisters who come to their ministries to participate in this prayerful experience.

The Blessed Sacrament will be exposed following the noon Mass. There will be time for quiet adoration until 4:30pm. At that time, the friars and all present will begin their evening prayers, which include the Liturgy of the Hours (psalms), quiet time, Scripture reading, intercessory prayer, and Benediction.

All are welcome....
