December 20, 2014 - December 23, 2014 Christmas Wafers available in the Shrine Gift Shop
Traditional Christmas Wafers are now available in the Shrine Gift Shop. The package includes two white wafers and one pink wafer in an envelope printed with "Glory to God in the Highest, Peace on Earth to People of Good Will." The cost is $1.99 each.

For further information or to reserve a package of Christmas wafers please contact the Shrine office at 410-531-2800 or info@shrineofstanthony.org.

From the Christmas wafer envelope:
A Legacy from the past: the vigil of Christmas Eve.
The Nativity of Our Lord Jesus Christ! The Holy Babe in a manger attended to by the Blessed Virgin Mary, both watched by the Protector of the Holy Family, St. Joseph. The shepherds from the hillsides, responding to the Angelic Hosts. Wise Men from the East worship the Holy Child.

Begun millenniums ago in Poland, Slovakia, Lithuania, this Christmas Eve ritual continues wherever the blessed Oplatek, the Christmas Wafer is shared.

Ancient ritual unites past with present...heaven with earth. An extra setting is in memory of ancestors, departed loved ones, and for the Unseen Guest, Jesus Christ. "A guest in the home is Christ in the home." A small portion is set aside for the animals. On the first Christmas when the Christ was born, the animals were the only honored "eye witnesses."

With the sign of the cross, we gather, now say the ancient canticle reserved for this day: "The Star of the Wise men appears in the East, summons us to celebrate this Royal Feast. The Star of Bethlehem with its gleaming light signifies that our Lord was born this holy night. The Word is made flesh - Him we humbly adore. Revealed in a manger - God's true Grace restores. In solemn tribute we bow, revere, proclaim: Blessed be our Lord! Worship His Holy Name!" The mother of the home or another assigned - lights the Festival Lights, candle(s) on the table. She says, for each candle : "The Light of Christ"...All respond: "Thanks be to God!

Leader: "We gather together on this holy evening for sacred and joyful Christmas Eve Vigil. On this night, closest to the year's shortest of days and longest of nights, a Star appears in the heavens, dispelling the darkness. We celebrate the fact that the Word became flesh."

All: "And full of Grace and Truth lived among us!"
Leader: "The Birth of our Lord Jesus Christ." A member of the family reads the Holy Nativity, St. Luke 2, verses 1-14.

Leader: "We share the holy wafers. Through this sharing we are God bound to forgive each other all the wrongs, real and imagined, which have been committed through the year...and promise never to return to them. Only then do we have a valid sharing of the holy wafers. As Christ forgives us, so we forgive each other. Then Bethlehem, the House of Bread, where the True Bread from heaven was born, is born from above, among us, in us. For this reason the Christmas wafer is called the "Bread of Unifying Love."

"Glory to God in the Highest, Peace to all God's people on Earth." The holy wafers are now shared with all present, each breaking a piece from the other. Exchange may include the traditional: "I wish you much health, happiness, and good fortune, and after this life an eternal crown in Heaven."...

December 20, 2014 - December 31, 2014 St. Anthony and the Donkey Statues now available in the Gift
The St. Anthony and the Donkey tabletop statues are now available in the Shrine Gift Shop. The retail price is $45 each or 2 statues for $80.

The Story of St. Anthony and the Donkey:
As pilgrims turn onto the Shrine of St. Anthony property and follow the path up the hill to the Shrine, they are met with a striking statue depicting one of the most famous scenes in the life of St. Anthony of Padua. Having been given the task of preaching to towns and villages that had begun to reject the Catholic faith, Anthony was continuously challenged to prove his and the Church's faith. One such occasion happened in the town of Rimini, south of Padua on the Adriatic Sea. A man named Bononillo was a well-known doubter of the real presence of Christ in the Sacramental bread and wine of the Mass. St. Anthony asked him what he could do to prove that Christ was truly present in the Eucharist Bread. The man sarcastically replied that if his donkey should bow before the consecrated bread, then he would believe. St. Anthony suggested that the donkey not be fed for a few days so that there would be no doubting the desire of the animal, who could then choose between eating his food or bowing before the Eucharist. The saint himself would also fast and pray for three days. On the third day a great crowd gathered around to see if the great saint and his faith in the Sacrament would fail. St. Anthony came forth from the Church just off the town square holding aloft the Eucharistic bread and took his place near a large basket full of oats and grains. A perfect meal for a hungry donkey.

The donkey was brought forth and St. Anthony cried out, "Creature of God, in His name, I command you to come here to adore Him, so that it will give truth to all of the Real Presence of Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament of the Eucharist." To the amazement of all, except St. Anthony, the donkey came forward and knelt in adoration before the Most Blessed Sacrament, before his and our God.

Many years before, another donkey brought Christ into the city and many were amazed at the presence of the Messiah in their midst. Some twelve centuries later, Christ is again revealed by a humble beast of burden. The man Bononillo was good for his word and immediately reconciled himself with God and with the Church, and led a great many people back to the faith. The Shrine of St. Anthony continues this great devotion to our Eucharistic King through Mass, Adoration, and by remembering this miraculous scene in St. Anthony's life. The statue of St. Anthony and the donkey overlooks our outdoor altar where many pilgrims have gathered for Mass and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament.

Our statue was designed by Fr. Joseph Dorniak, OFM Conv. and installed in the spring of 2011. As you contemplate this scene, notice how St. Anthony's cloak and the hair of the donkey are being buffeted by the wind. This is to symbolize the winds of doubt that are raging through this world at all times and in every age. Courageously and triumphantly, St. Anthony raises the Monstrance before the Donkey and the world in a great act of faith and trust. How many of us who are the pinnacle of God's creation, immortal and chosen, have failed to bow before the presence of God? How many times have we failed where the Donkey succeeded? This act of bravery on the part of St. Anthony was done in the face of those who would sneer, ridicule, and jeer at Christ himself and much more at us his disciples who struggle as creatures fallen from a greater glory. Thus, the winds of doubt blow strong against St. Anthony but the Donkey has appropriately aligned himself with the truth. The donkey is faced forward in prostration toward the source of all life and his back side facing toward the source of doubt and death from which the breezes of futility blow against the never wavering Saint.

The Franciscan Friars of the Shrine of St. Anthony hope you enjoy this unique replica statue! If you would like more information on St. Anthony or this statue, please contact us at 410-531-2800 or info@shrineofstanthony.org...

Eucharistic Adoration on Thursdays
All are welcome to spend time with the Lord during Eucharistic Adoration each Thursday from after the noon Mass until 5:30pm.

Thursday is traditionally the Eucharistic Day in the Catholic Church as it is the day our Lord gave us His Body and Blood at the Last Supper. It is also the day the friars and postulants at St. Joseph Cupertino Friary, of which the Shrine of St. Anthony is part, celebrate a holy hour. In addition, all the friars of the St. Anthony Province (all of the East Coast) celebrate a holy hour for vocations on the third Thursday of each month. The friars are encouraged to invite our brothers and sisters who come to their ministries to participate in this prayerful experience.

The Blessed Sacrament will be exposed following the noon Mass. There will be time for quiet adoration until 4:30pm. At that time, the friars and all present will begin their evening prayers, which include the Liturgy of the Hours (psalms), quiet time, Scripture reading, intercessory prayer, and Benediction.

All are welcome....
